House Motene

2024
Heritage Alteration

A 1924 old Johannesburg home. Built originally by the city’s first female architect, Nelly Edwards.

The home had many changes over the years, most adding layers of mess that tangled the original building. We aimed to create a holistic alteration that created a blend of modern architecture while embracing the original aesthetic of the now heritage building.

In order to maximise the full potential of the structure as a modern family home, we looked at additions that would create a duality between old and new, a conversation of architectural forms that enhance the functionality of the home.
